The year is 1832 and Charles Darwin, only 22 years old, is on the voyage of his life. Captain FitzRoy is sailing the HMS Beagle toward the Galapagos Islands, and Darwin is starting on the journey that will take him to a theory that will shake the world in its very foundations: the theory of evolution by natural selection. In Origin of Species we take this journey with Darwin, and we share in the thoughts and dreams of a man who will forever change man’s view of himself and his place in the world.

He sits there on the deck of the ship, lazy, incompetent and seasick, said Jo Strømgren before the premiere of the work in 2013. Strømgren has long been fascinated by Darwin’s crazy ideas, and by how Darwin gradually began to formulate a new and greater way of viewing the world view completely at odds with the belief system Darwin was raised in. There is grandeur in this view of life, Darwin wrote in conclusion. But this grandeur was not embraced by all.

Origin of Species is based on Darwin’s epoch-making book of the same title. It is produced by Mongo Park in cooperation with Jo Strømgren Kompani. The performances in Stavanger are a co-production between Mungo Park, Jo Strømgren Kompani, Tou Scene and Rogaland Teater.

«Scintillating and brilliant theatre» and five stars was Stavanger Aftenblad’s judgement when the production guested Bergen.
